Postpartum Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (PPIUCD) Intervention

In order to address the 20% unmet need for Family Planning, NCMNH is implementing an intervention for insertion of Postpartum Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (PPIUCD) at selected public and private Hospitals of Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi/Islamabad. The intervention aims to train Skilled Birth Attendants (SBAs) to insert PPIUCD in women delivering at the intervention sites. The ultimate objective is to institutionalize PPIUCD services.

Pilot Phase was initiated in March 2012 in two public sector teaching hospitals of Karachi. PPIUCD was inserted in 29% of the 21,570 women who delivered at the two sites. Encouraged by the results the intervention was scaled up to other hospitals in Karachi and cities of Lahore and Rawalpindi /Islamabad. During the scale-up phase, PPIUCD was inserted in another 19% of women who delivered during this phase (October 2013-September 2015). Now the intervention is in phase 2 and PPIUCD has been inserted in 26.5% of the women who delivered at the intervention sites during the first year. So far during the intervention 49,442 PPIUCD have been inserted in around 22% of women who delivered at the intervention sites.A total of 1065 SBAs has been trained during the intervention.
