Constituted in January 1994, by late Benazir Bhutto. A three-member committee was formed with the Secretary, Ministry of Health, as its Ex Officio Chairman, for “analyzing high rate of Maternal Mortality and Morbidity and developing and demonstrating workable approaches with the objective to lower these rates.”
Three members were:
- Dr. Faridon Setna
- Dr. Sadiqua N. Jafarey
- Mrs. Imtiaz Kamal
They co-opted specialists from other related fields. Neonate was included in 2005.Originally named Prime Minister’s Committee was renamed to “National Committee for Maternal and Neonatal Health”(NCMNH).
No Woman or Newborn in Pakistan should die or be disabled as a result of preventable and treatable complications of pregnancy and childbirth.
The National Committee for Maternal and Neonatal Health is a body that advises on Policy and Technical matters for Safe Motherhood and Prevention of Maternal and Neonatal deaths and disabilities.It also advocates for and demonstrates workable approaches for the same.
